If your students need extra practice identifying beginning sounds, this low-prep resource makes it easy to get started. Use it to build phonemic awareness skills like matching, isolating, and segmenting initial sounds, without needing to plan a thing.

The picture cards can be used in whole group, small group, or independent centers. Students sort pictures by beginning sound or match pairs with the same initial sound. The worksheets add another layer of practice with simple cut-and-paste tasks that reinforce listening for initial sounds.

Since the picture cards are not grouped by sound, this is best for students who already have some familiarity with beginning sounds and are ready for mixed practice.

You can print the cards in color or black and white, and the worksheets are all black and white for easy prep. I recommend laminating the cards for durability and pairing them with clothespins or counters for extra engagement!

Here’s what’s included:

  • 113 picture cards in color and black & white

  • 10 cut-and-paste worksheets targeting beginning sound matching

  • A 3-sound box template for segmenting and phoneme mapping practice

  • Answer keys

This resource supports the Science of Reading by targeting phonemic awareness, specifically the ability to isolate and match initial sounds.

Use it in your literacy centers, small group warm-ups, or as independent reinforcement after a phonics lesson.

If you’re looking for more no-prep tools to build strong phonemic awareness skills, check out my Phonemic Awareness Task Cards.

Prep is quick and simple—just print the cards, cut, and go!
